María de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga (Anglès, Gerona, Spain, December 16, 1908 – Mexico City, October 8, 1963), known as Remedios Varo, was a Spanish surrealist painter, writer and graphic artist.
He was born in Anglès, in the province of Gerona and grew up in Madrid from the age of 9, where his family moved their residence.
María de los Remedios Alicia Rodriga Varo y Uranga took her most popular name, Remedios, due to the name of the patron saint of the Girona town of Anglés, who is the Virgen de los Remedios, whom her mother venerated, since she was very religious, and to the one that was entrusted promising to put the name of the patron if the delivery went well, since she had previously lost two children due to typhus.
The influence of Anglés in Varo's work is due to the involvement of Remedios' father in local life that led him to be one of the founders of the Esperanto-based Local Anglesense Cooperative "Libera Popolo".
Rodrigo Varo's profession forced the family to move their residence.
She was one of the first women to study at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid.
Varo's work evokes a world that emerged from his imagination where the scientific, the mystical, the esoteric and the magical are mixed.
Contrary to what is believed and taken for granted, Remedios Varo never acquired Mexican nationality, retaining her Spanish nationality, although she never wanted to return to her homeland, unlike her friend Leonora Carrington who did become a national in the American country.
